What Is Prompt Engineering? A Practical Intro
Prompt engineering is the skill of giving AI clear instructions. Learn six core techniques and a reusable template for chatbots and image generators.

Prompt engineering is the practice of writing instructions that get an AI model to produce the result you want. The "engineering" part is less intimidating than it sounds: it mostly means being clear, giving the right context and improving your instructions based on what comes back.
Why prompts matter
AI models do not read your mind — they respond to the words you provide. Two people can ask the same model for the same thing and get very different quality, purely because one prompt was specific and the other was not. Better prompts mean fewer retries, less editing and more predictable results, whether you are generating text, code or images.
Six core techniques
1. Be specific about the goal
State exactly what you want. "Write a product description" is a wish; "write a 60-word product description for a matte-black ceramic mug, warm and minimal in tone" is an instruction.
2. Give context
Tell the model who the output is for and what it is used for. Audience, platform and purpose all change what a good answer looks like.
3. Assign a role
Framing the model as, say, a senior product photographer or an experienced copy editor often produces more focused, consistent output than leaving the role open.
4. Show examples
Including one or two examples of the output you like is one of the most reliable ways to communicate tone and format. This is often called few-shot prompting.
5. Set constraints and format
Specify length, structure and what to avoid: "under 60 words", "as a numbered list", "no jargon". Constraints stop the model from guessing.
6. Iterate
Treat the first answer as a draft. Tell the model what to keep and what to change, or tweak one part of the prompt and run it again.
A reusable prompt template
Role: You are a senior product photographer. Task: Write five image prompts for the launch campaign of a ceramic coffee mug. Context: The audience is design-conscious millennials; the brand tone is warm and minimal. Constraints: Each prompt under 60 words; include lighting and lens; no text in the image. Format: Numbered list.
Swap in your own role, task and constraints and you have a starting point for almost any request.
Text prompts vs image prompts
The principles are the same — specificity, context, constraints, iteration — but the vocabulary differs. Text prompts lean on instructions, roles and formats. Image prompts lean on visual language: subject, setting, medium, lighting, lens and composition. If you are starting with images, read our beginner's guide to AI image prompts.
Is prompt engineering a career?
For most people it is better thought of as a skill than a job title. Designers, marketers, developers and writers increasingly use prompting as part of their everyday toolkit, and the people who get the most from AI tools tend to be the ones who communicate clearly with them.
Frequently asked questions
Is prompt engineering hard to learn?
No. The fundamentals — be specific, add context, set constraints and iterate — can be learned in an afternoon. Mastery comes from practice and from studying prompts that work.
Do the same prompting techniques work for ChatGPT, Claude and image generators?
The core ideas transfer across tools, but each tool has its own quirks. Test the same idea in the tool you use and adjust the wording and parameters to fit it.
